Dizziness: Treatment
built 633 days ago
If dizziness persists despite treatment, people can learn how to avoid movements that tend to trigger dizziness. Examples are looking up, reaching up, or bending down. One way to avoid these movements is to store household items between waist and eye level. Getting up slowly after sitting or lying down for a while can help. Clenching the hands and flexing the feet sometimes helps, especially if the dizziness feels like light-headedness.

Occasionally hearing impairment, head noise and ear pressure occur without dizziness. This type of Meniere's disease is called cochlear hydrops. Similarly, episodic dizziness and ear pressure may occur without hearing loss and tinnitus; this is called vestibular hydrops. Treatment of both of these is the same as for Meniere's disease.

Treatment of BPPV is usually an office repositioning maneuver, that places the crystals in an area that does not cause dizziness. If they stay motionless for 48 hours they will often resorb or stick in place. Keeping the head upright assists this. Following repositioning, certain head exercises can help decrease symptoms. Repositioning may need to be done on multiple occasions.

Treatment of dizziness due to changes in circulation consists of anti-dizziness medication, medications to stimulate the circulation (vasodilators) and, at times, mild sedation. One with this type of dizziness should avoid drugs that constrict the blood vessels such as caffeine (coffee) and nicotine (tobacco). Emotional stress, anxiety and excessive fatigue should be avoided as much as possible.

Rarely, allergies may cause dizziness and/or vertigo. Allergies are usually diagnosed by obtaining a careful history and occasionally performing a series of skin tests with inhalants and food, and/or blood tests. Treatment usually consists of elimination of the offending agents when possible, or if this is not possible, by allergy shots to stimulate immunity.

The treatment of migraine related dizziness is the same as the treatment of migraine. Headache hygiene and trigger factors should be reviewed. Prophylactic medications are prescribed, if indicated. Abortive medications, such as triptans, are effective for migraine related dizziness, whether accompanied by headache or not.
