Dizziness: Patients
built 634 days ago
Dizziness is a feeling of lightheadedness. There are many possible causes for dizziness. For cancer patients, the cause is often nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, which leads to dehydration and ... a drop in blood pressure, resulting in dizziness. Treatment of nausea and vomiting with antiemetic drugs may help relieve dizziness.

Dizziness is one of the five most common complaints patients have when they see a doctor. But to the layperson, the term can mean a variety of things, such as feeling woozy, light-headed or on the verge of fainting. The very fuzziness of the terminology presents a major diagnostic challenge to family physicians, said Samuels.

Yardley and colleagues tracked the progress of 150 patients with vestibular imbalancean inner-ear disorder that triggers dizziness. Patients began treatment by learning how to perform increasingly intense eye, head and body movements daily at home. The treatment works by helping the inner ear recalibrate to reduce dizziness. But the patient must work through the dizziness before it can lessen, Yardley explains.

For some reason doctors and patients think first about brain tumors when dealing with dizziness. In fact, serious problems like this are very rare. One rare benign tumor that everyone seems to worry about is an acoustic neuroma or schwannoma (pictured above). Almost everyone ends up getting an MRI or CT brain scan to look for this rare entity which most of the time causes hearing loss in one ear.

Fortunately, most types of dizziness can be cured or at least improved. But in some cases, no medical or surgical treatment may be effective. If so, patients will need to learn how to adapt to a chronic problem. Diet, rehabilitation and exercise can all be important as can developing a positive attitude. As noted above, antidepressants are sometimes very effective, not only to help with the anxiety and depression commonly associated with persistent dizziness, but ... because these medications can actually help the inner ear and brain's chemicals (neurotransmitters). These medications should be supervised by your family doctor.
