Diverticulitis: Treatments
built 614 days ago
Diverticulitis with inflammatory stenosis An acute diverticulitis has developed into an inflammatory stenosis. An erythematous mucosa with interstitial edema is responsible for an extreme mucosal vulnerability. An endoscopic passaage is not possible. After antibiotic treatment a diverticulosis can be diagnosed, the endoscopic passage is smooth at the time of this second endoscopy.
For an attack of acute diverticulitis, you will probably be hospitalized. Depending on how bad the attack is, your treatment may include antibiotics, intravenous (IV) fluids, and nasogastric suction (a procedure that relieves pressure in the intestine).

During the treatment of an acute attack of diverticulitis certain dietary measures need to be taken. During the attack, diet is severely restricted to allow the inflamed and infected colon time to heal. However, after the acute phase haspassed a high fibre diverticulosis diet plan needs to be implemented.
Approximately 20% of patients with diverticulitis require surgical treatment. In a study by Belmonte et al, patients with diverticulitis with pelvic abscesses or generalized peritonitis had a mortality rate of 7.7%.3 Of patients treated for diverticulitis, 5% experience a second occurrence within 2 years of the initial episode.
