"High School Musical" premiered on Disney Channel on January 20th, 2006, and became the highest rated original movie up until that time. It won the Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Children's Programming, and received two Emmy Awards (of its total 6 nominations), a DGA Award, an Imagen Award for Best Children's Program, and a Humanitas Prize nomination. The soundtrack received a Billboard Music Award for Soundtrack of the Year, and was nominated for an American Music Award in the Favorite Album (Pop/Rock) category. The film even earned an entry in the Guinness World Record Book as the first TV movie to deliver nine concurrent singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Disney Teen Star Zac Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California to David Efron and Starla Baskett. He has a brother, Dylan, and has two Australian shepherds Dreamer and Puppy, as well as a Siamese cat named Simon. When he was eleven years old he was cast in the musical Gypsy, a role that lasted for 90 performances. He went on to appear in the stage productions of Mame, Peter Pan, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Music Man. After leaving the stage he became a cast member of Summerland where he remained until taking a role in the 2006 hit Disney cable movie High School Musical.

"High School Musical 2" proved the Disney Channel can boast of more than a one-hit TV wonder. Friday's premiere drew an audience of 17.2 million, making it the most-watched basic cable program ever, according to Nielsen Media Research. It more than doubled the viewership of the first movie, "High School Musical," which drew 7.7 million in 2006.
