Dishwasher: Dishwasher Pete
built 646 days ago
This memoir by the legendary "Dishwasher Pete" is excellent news for those fans who went into mourning after he stopped publishing his renowned 'zine of the same name. Pete spent more than fifteen years chronicling his quest to work as a dishwasher in all 50 states, and along the way picked up all kinds of fascinating lore about labor history, the restaurant industry, and the fine art of couch surfing. An instant classic, this book should go straight into the backpack of any young traveler, right alongside Orwell's Down and Out In Paris and London. – Picked by Suzanne

Dishwasher Pete is the pen name for Pete Jordan, author of the popular Dishwasher zine as well as the book of the same title and whose goal was to wash dishes in every state in America. For more than a decade, he moved from city to city, state to state, washing dishes in restaurants, hospitals, cafeterias, ski resorts, camps, communes, a fish cannery, an offshore oil rig, a dinner train and just about anywhere where dishes were dirty. He was once invited to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman. He did not wish to be on national television, and so a friend of his took his place on the show, pretending to be him. Later, while promoting his book, Pete himself appeared on Letterman and the two discussed the earlier "appearance".

Actually, Dishwasher Pete quits a lot. He can't remember how many jobs he's had. He has no home. A friend forwards his mail every few weeks. He doesn't sell subscriptions to his newsletter, because it's too much of a responsibility. Instead, he sells single copies for $1 each.

Dishwasher is the true story of a man on a mission: to clean dirty dishes professionally in every state in America. Part adventure, part parody, and part miraculous journey of self-discovery, it is the unforgettable account of Pete Jordan's transformation from itinerant seeker into "Dishwasher Pete"—unlikely folk hero, writer, publisher of his own cult zine, and the ultimate professional dish dog—and how he gave it all up for love.
