Interestingly, the disease only became apparent in 1975 when mothers of a group of children who lived near each other in Lyme, Connecticut, made researchers aware that their children all were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. This unusual grouping of illness that appeared "rheumatoid" eventually led researchers to the identification of the bacterial cause of the children's condition, what was then called "Lyme disease" in 1982. The number of cases of the disease in an area depends on the amount of ticks in an area and how often the ticks are infected with the bacteria. In certain areas of New York, where Lyme disease is common, over half of the ticks are infected. Lyme disease has been reported most often in the northeastern United States, but it has been reported in all 50 states, as well as China, Europe, Japan, Australia, and the parts of the former Soviet Union. In the United States, it is primarily contracted in the Northeast from the state of Maine to Maryland, in the Midwest in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and in the West in Oregon and Northern California.

Ixodes dammini is responsible for most of the cases of Lyme disease in the northeastern United States. These ticks are found in grassy areas (including lawns), and in brushy, shrubby and woodland sites, even on warm winter days. They prefer areas where some moisture is present. The tick has three life stages: larva, nymph and adult. Each stage takes a single blood meal. They feed on a variety of warm blooded animals including man, dogs, cats, horses and cows.

These data further corroborate preclinical data presented last month which showed NF-kappaB Decoy's ability to dramatically decrease inflammation and swelling in preclinical models of atopic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease ... known as eczema. Corgentech is currently conducting a multi-center, Phase 1/2 clinical trial of NF-kappaB Decoy for eczema in the United States involving approximately 75 patients, and a second trial of approximately 120 patients will begin enrolling patients imminently and will be conducted in Australia and Switzerland. The company has not yet forecasted its plans relating to a clinical trial for IBD.

This disease was once restricted to the western states, but is now very prevalent in the Midwest. It's usually a disease of older sheep. Lung infection causes sheep to waste away. In younger sheep it may express itself as mastitis and hard meaty udders that produce little or no milk. Since it can be passed from sheep to sheep by contact and via colostrum, culling of infected sheep is recommended.
