It is estimated that roughly 1.5 million Americans are affected by Parkinson's disease, making it the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Approximately 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. There presently is no known cure for Parkinson's disease.
Frontotemporal Dementia tends to occur at a younger age than Alzheimer's disease and can affect both men and women. The average length of the disease is 2-10 years. Little is known about the cause of Frontotemporal Dementia and risk factors have yet to be identified. While most cases are not inherited, there is an autosomal dominant gene (chromosome 17) which can be passed from generation to generation. This type of Frontotemporal Dementia is extremely rare.

Alzheimer's disease is a devastating disorder of memory and thinking that affects not only those with the disease, but ... their families and society as a whole. More than 4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer disease and data from the Alzheimer’s Association indicate that currently there are 106,000 cases of Alzheimer disease in the State of Indiana with an anticipated growth of 54% by the year 2030. Although many advances have been made recently in the understanding of the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and genetics of Alzheimer's disease, much research remains to be done.

"We are excited about extending this agreement with Eisai, a leader in Alzheimer's disease research and treatment," said Neil Kurtz, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of TorreyPines. "We look forward to advancing the small molecule program further with Eisai's support, as well as to continuing to work with them on our initial research collaboration to identify genetically-validated pharmaceutical targets for Alzheimer's disease."
Myriad Additional in vitro research conducted by Dr. Greg Cole and colleagues at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and presented at the 8th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, further support the potential clinical utility of R-flurbiprofen. The study found that R-flurbiprofen limited production of Ab42 and ... of two other proteins implicated in the formation of plaques. Of the drugs tested, Dr. Cole specifically singled out R-flurbiprofen concluding that, "Because of this triple efficacy and low side-effect profile, R-flurbiprofen shows potential for clinical trials aimed at Alzheimer's disease prevention or treatment."

GENEVA, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Anavex Life Sciences Corp. ("ANAVEX") AVXL is pleased to announce promising developments with ANAVEX 1-41, the company's lead drug candidate for Alzheimer's disease. In recent pre-clinical animal studies, ANAVEX 1-41 prevented oxidative stress, which damages and destroys cells and is believed to be a primary cause of Alzheimer's disease. ANAVEX 1-41 ... prevented the expression of caspase-3, an enzyme that plays a key role in programmed cell death and in the loss of cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that regulates learning, emotion and memory.
