- Florida -- Florida State
Florida's population was diversifying as it grew. In the thirty years after Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba in 1959, more than 800,000 Cubans moved to the Miami area. Haitians and Nicaraguans ... fled to Florida from oppressive regimes in their homelands. People from all over Latin America and beyond came seeking jobs and advancement. From the northern states, retirees flooded into the sunshine and warmth. By 1990, 25 percent of the population was elderly. - Florida Panhandle
The Florida Panhandle is to the state as Jan Brady of TV's The Brady Bunch is to her family. Cindy, the cute younger sister, could represent Orlando and Tampa, with their amusements and attractions. South and Southwest Florida could be Marcia, the gorgeous older sister whom everyone fawns over and talks about. Then there's the misunderstood, underestimated, middle sister Jan -- in this case, Northwest Florida, aka the Panhandle -- always getting the shaft, even though she has some great qualities all her own, if only people took the time to discover them. For the Panhandle, this is a particular shame, since it is a dynamic, uncommonly beautiful part of Florida. - Florida Everglades
The Florida Everglades, located in southern Florida, is one of the largest wetlands in the world. Several hundred years ago, this wetlands was a major part of a 5,184,000 acre watershed that covered almost a third of the entire state of Florida. The Everglades consist of a shallow sheet of fresh water that rolls slowly over the lowlands and through billions of blades of sawgrass. As water moves through the Everglades, it causes the sawgrass to ripple like green waves; this is why the Everglades received the nickname "River of Grass." It is worth mentioning that the Bermuda Triangle does still hold a mystery concerning Flight 19: what actually became of the planes. In 1991 the wreckage of five Avengers was discovered off the coast of Florida. At the time of the discovery nearly everyone assumed that the planes were the Flight 19 squadron, but it was found later that the serial numbers on the engine blocks did not match, so the whereabouts of Flight 19 remain unknown. - Saint Petersburg -- Florida Ian

Josepha Cheong, M.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Florida and chair of the APA Council on Aging, told Psychiatric News that the study impressed her for several reasons. For one, the researchers attempted to identify the interplay of a cluster of genes that may be involved in the etiology and clinical presentation of Alzheimer's disease instead of looking for the effect of a single gene at a time, which is more common. For another, she believes that the study "represents a continuation in the discovery of genes involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease." And finally, whereas the "research results may not be acutely clinically relevant, they portend significant possibilities for diagnosis and treatment." - University of Florida -- American Universities
A schism among American University trustees is widening over the future of suspended President Benjamin Ladner, with some beginning private negotiations with his attorneys for a new contract and others pressing for his ouster. … Complicating an already tangled process, Ladner supporters on the board have divided themselves into three strategy groups, according to two sources familiar with the negotiations. One group reviewed some of the more than $500,000 of the president's spending questioned in an independent report and determined that he should reimburse the university roughly $21,000. Another group is bringing in a tax expert for advice. And a third is putting together terms of a new contract for Ladner that would reduce his compensation while adding controls over his spending and other activities, the sources said. - Florida Title Insurance -- Closings
