Created by IREM Software Engineering, the developers behind such classic games as the R-Type series, Disaster Report delivers an original twist on the survival action-adventure genre. Unlike other games in this category, players are pit against nature in a heart-racing battle to stay alive. The game is set on man-made island called Capital City, built by the government as a means of managing resources, communications, commerce and an ever-growing population.

Played primarily from a third-person perspective behind the lead character, Disaster Report makes use of two horizontal gauges to monitor health and thirst as well as a compass icon to indicate the direction the character is facing. To obtain a closer look at the surroundings, a first-person view can be accessed with a press of a button. Players can use objects found within the environment to help save potential victims, assemble makeshift items (like torches or flashlights) by combining objects, and learn more about the situation by reading found documents or listening to recordings.

Amjad Bhatti, coordinating editor of the report, explained the process as how researchers from across South Asia contributed in the report to develop a regional perspective on disaster risk reduction. He said the word ‘beneficiary’ used for disaster affected people amounted to the disrespect of communities. “They are the rightful claimants not beneficiaries, he said. Exploring the linkages between development and disasters, he said there was no neutral development in the world.

The Natural Disaster Condition Report was created as a result of client requests to have a tool that would enable them to make informed decisions prior to distributing mortgage funding for potentially damaged properties. Previously, this report was only available to the clients involved in the initial requests for the solution.

This year’s World Disasters Report cites the examples of blind, deaf or paralysed people, who may not be able to flee danger on their own. Do evacuation plans take into account that a part of the population may not know how to read because they have been excluded from school? Are the nutritional and medical needs of the elderly and pregnant women taken into account in assistance plans? Do distribution systems ensure all have access to essential food and water? Are vulnerable women protected from sexual and other forms of violence in crisis situations?

Disaster Report works very well in its spontaneity. You have no idea when a portion of the floor to break away, how far a land piece may teeter off the edge, or if something will crush you from above. Its definitely tense when you start to hear a rumble or see a car plunge down into the ocean. If Agetec can work on the camera controls and the fluctuating frame rate, Disaster Report could be a new breed of survival terror.
