The forthcoming MPEG-4 DVR will be the key to enjoying the explosion of HD content that is coming to DirecTV. The service has offered HD for quite some time, including HD versions of HBO, Showtime, ESPN, HDNet, and more. However, DirecTV's gameplan for the next several years includes using a trio of new satellites to carry many more stations in HD, including local channels in many major US markets. Those new satellites will transmit their HD content in the MPEG-4 codec... meaning that the existing HD TiVo user base won't be able to view or record the new channels.
