DirecTV customers must be getting excited with the news today that 21 new channels in full HD are being released and the promise from DirecTV to launch the rest of the 100 HD channels soon. This means they've more than doubled their HiDef availability. From 16 to 37 networks in all. While some are pretty much just padding like Showtime, Starz West, and even the Weather Channel.

With the new additions, DIRECTV now offers local HD broadcast channels in 53 cities, representing more than 67 percent of U.S. TV households. The operator's local HD channel rollout is part of a nationwide expansion that includes plans to offer local HD channels in up to 75 markets and up to 100 national channels by the end of this year.

DIRECTV recently launched a brand new satellite that is now beaming down over 85 of the most popular channels in HD. Unfortunately, because of bandwidth issues, Cable companies and DishNetwork are simply unable to provide customers with this many HD channels and have decided to spread a lot of misinformation about what is available.

DirecTV announced the HD-expansion strategy in January, citing networks that didn’t exist yet. Since then, it has signed agreements to roll out HD channels from programmers including Disney, Discovery Communications, A&E Television Networks, HBO, Fox, Turner Broadcasting System, NBC Universal, Showtime Networks, Starz Entertainment and Scripps Networks.

Please note, that in the near future, DIRECTV will be launching new state-of-the-art satellites to deliver HD local channel feeds from additional markets. When local HD channels launch in your market, you may no longer be able to see local programming feeds, and a new dish and HD receiver will be required to see your local market HD channels.
