The Directory is an exciting outgrowth of the Poets House Showcase, an annual exhibit of all of the new poetry books and poetry-related texts published in the United States in a single year. Each year, Poets House adds the bibliographic records of all the books exhibited in the Showcase to the Directory—with the exception of those that are published outside of the United States. The database is searchable by author, title, editor or translator, publisher, publication date, book type, and any keyword from the description. Results may be sorted by author, title or publisher.

The Directory has been on-line since March of 2004 and is updated daily. On-line forms are provided to allow firms in the directory to add their detail and to keep their information up-to-date and for firms not currently in the directory to add their information.

The Directory column contains a unique identifier for a directory or directory path. This column can contain the name of a property that is set to the full path of a target directory. If this column contains a property, the target directory takes the name specified in the DefaultDir column and takes the parent directory specified in the Directory_Parent column.

The Directory value for a non-root directory is ... interpreted as the name of a property defining the location of the destination. If the property is defined, the destination directory is resolved to the property's value. If the property is not defined, the destination directory is resolved to a subdirectory beneath the resolved destination directory for the Directory_Parent entry. The DefaultDir value defines the name of the subdirectory.
