August 30, 2007 -- DINA Merrill was nice enough to buy a portrait of her husband, Ted Hartley, which Andy Warhol painted more than 30 years ago - even though she doesn't like the picture. Hartley, who now runs RKO Pictures, was an actor at the time and met Warhol at a dinner party at Monte Carlo's Hotel de Paris. The artist persuaded him to pose for a series of photos, some shirtless. Hartley forgot about the odd episode until the Warhol Foundation contacted Merrill last spring with news that four forgotten portraits of Hartley had been "discovered." The Post cereal heiress, whose mother built Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, recently confided to writer Gregory Speck over cocktails at her oceanfront East Hampton estate, "I thought Andy Warhol was awful, and because he was so weird I could never abide his paintings, so the portrait of Ted is in our house in Beverly Hills, where it is going to stay."

Lifeboat [1944] (REGION 1) (NTSC) Laurence Harvey does a good job as Liggett, a man who struggles with his pride for having married his wealthy wife, Emily (Dina Merrill), whose family has him on a golden leash. Dina Merrill is quite good as Emily, but her role is terribly dated. She plays it as if she were a Stepford wife, a good little woman who will patiently wait until her husband stops boozing it up and whoring around. Her scene with her mother on this very issue, in which her mother congratulates her on her wisdom, is enough to make the viewer laugh.

Gloria becomes involved with Weston Liggett (Laurence Harvey), a wealthy but emotionally cold man who is married to Emily (Dina Merrill). Weston shows Gloria precious little respect or kindness at first, but as they share a few bouts with the bottle, they discover that both are desperately lacking in self-confidence and have little happiness in their lives.
The socialite-heiress Dina Merrill made her film debut in Desk Set and found a champion for her work in Tracy. Months after Desk Set had wrapped, Tracy petitioned to have Merrill play a role in a film of John O'Hara's book, Ten North Frederick (1958) in which he was ... appearing. Tracy was so adamant that Merrill appear in the picture that when she was turned down for the role, Tracy left the production as well, with Gary Cooper replacing Tracy.
