Spiritual purity is present in yet another type of woman in many forms of nineteenth-century fiction including the dime novel. The woman whose physical handicap or general ill health weakens her is always pure and full of inspirational courage. The frontier dime novel contained fewer delicate heroines, though they were ... present in some of the stories. This reduced incidence may be attributable to the actual pioneer experience. The rigorous life nat urally required physical strength; women who lacked it soon died, a fact which may account for the numerous young dime-novel heroines who are orphans or who have only a male parent.
