The Digimon franchise has been criticized as being a clone of the more popular Pokémon title, as both properties are aimed at children and feature interaction between humans and fictional monsters. Thematically, though, they bear little in common. A Digimon human counterpart receives only one Digimon (an exception being Willis in which he was given two twin Digimon) while Pokémon trainers can have as many Pokémon as they want provided they have enough Pokéballs. A human will become a DigiDestined if, as the name implies, they are destined to be one (or, as in Digimon Tamers, they share a special bond with a Digimon) while, in Pokémon, a trainer can have any Pokémon he or she wants as long as he/she captures it. Some Digimon video games ... center on sportsmanship, but in the anime, Digimon fight to survive or to destroy enemies, as opposed to Pokémon battles where the Pokémon faints instead of dying. In addition, once a Pokémon evolves it has no way to go back to its original state, while a Digimon can.

Digimon Tamers premiered in the spring of 2001 in Japan, and was brought over to North America in the September of the same year. Tamers was the first spin-off anime. Although it shares many similarities to the first two seasons, it is a stand alone season, with all new characters and a new storyline.

In some cases, Digimon have ... been granted the ability to Digivolve into higher forms by other, very powerful Digimon. In Digimon Tamers, Impmon was able to Digivolve into his mega form by using power given to him by the Sovereign Zhuqiaomon.
