In 2001 analysts believed Diedrich Coffee was doing well in rebounding from its earlier losses. The company's profits at the end of 2000 were about $1 million higher than in 1999. John Martin believed the company was now in a position to move ahead with expansion plans and open many new stores. As of 2000 he hoped to open 1,200 to 1,500 new units over the next five years. In 1999 and 2000 the company signed two agreements with M & P Coffee, Ltd., a national franchise operator, to develop 50 coffeehouses in southern California and 17 coffeehouses and an undetermined number of kiosks in Nevada. In 2000 former Boston Chicken executive J. Michael Jenkins replaced Tim Ryan as president and CEO when Ryan retired.

Diedrich Coffee has roots dating from 1916, when Charlotte Diedrich inherited a coffee plantation in Costa Rica. In 1946 her son, Lieutenant Carl Ernst Diedrich, began travelling the world to find coffee beans. He studied the art of coffee roasting in Naples and travelled through the Middle East, most notably Yemen. In Vienna he obtained the formula for Cafe Sacher's espresso blend, Wiener Melange, and the famous Vienna ferris wheel is still featured on the Wiener Melange label. In the early 1950s Carl and his wife Inga settled in Guatemala; 20 years later they shipped coffee beans up from Guatemala in their VW van and settled in Orange County near Newport Beach, where Diedrich Coffee was founded by son Martin in 1983.

Diedrich Coffee is a coffee company based in Irvine, CA. Its first coffee house in Orange County, CA was opened in 1983. It owns the American mall-based stores for Gloria Jean's Coffees. In Oregon, it previously ran Coffee People until nearly every location was bought and closed or converted into a Starbucks (Diedrich retained ownership of the Coffee People locations inside the Portland Airport.)[1]
