Dick Bruna (1927) is one of the few living Dutch artists to have achieved worldwide fame among young and old. He started drawing in 1940 and among the books he illustrated was the series entitled Zwarte Beertjes (Little Black Bears). Bruna has spent his later career developing his skills within the picture book genre, creating characters such as miffy. The work of Dick Bruna is distinguished by its simple and direct draughtsmanship. Not only has Bruna made more than a hundred picture books, he has ... designed more than two thousand book covers, over one hundred posters, postcards and prints. Aged 78, he still works every day in his studio in Utrecht - this year he published his 114th title.
Dick Bruna is one of the most famous graphic artists in the Netherlands and his picture book character Miffy (... known as “Usako-chan” in Japan) is loved by everybody in Japan. This is the first major retrospective of Bruna in this country featuring about 1000 items to introduce his career of almost five decades, including early posters, designs, book bindings that have rarely displayed in the past. Especially the Black Bear poster series and the original drawings and sketches from Utrecht Central Museum in the Netherlands are the debut in Japan. Various Miffy items are available at the museum shop.
Nijntje, by Dick Bruna Dick Bruna had a passion for drawing and painting from a very young age. After World War II, Bruna left school and went to London to become a publisher. A year later he left London for Paris, where he frequently visited the museums. The works of modern artists like Picasso, Matisse and Braque made a great impression on the young Dick Bruna, who still enjoyed painting and drawing. He then realized he wanted to become an artist and when he returned to The Netherlands he put his talents to use as an illustrator for the family business.

Dick Bruna's work extends beyond children's books. He began his career in the graphics industry as a designer of book covers for the family publishing business A.W. Bruna & Zoon. His designs for the Zwarte Beertjes series, Havank, Maigret and The Saint are wellknown. The posters he designed for the Zwarte Beertjes paperbacks ... enjoy considerable renown.

He became famous with his creation of 'miffy', the cartoon bunny, who grew over a period of 50 years to become an international phenomenon as a character in children's books and as a design icon. Dick Bruna's books have been translated into more than 40 languages and 85 million copies have been sold worldwide. In addition to the picture books, the exhibition, which covers over 4,000 square feet of the dick bruna huis... displays a selection from his 2,000 book covers, over 100 posters and dozens of postcards and pictures. A documentary gives an overview of his working process and it also shows Bruna's lifelong aim for directness and simplicity.
Dick Bruna was born in Utrecht in 1927 and is one of the Netherlands' most celebrated living artists. His worldwide recognition is due to his charming character Miffy, a rabbit drawn in clear, simple lines. Miffy's adventures have appealed to the imaginations of generations of young children.  Dick Bruna's picture books have been translated into over 40 languages. His first book, The Apple, was published in 1953.
