Diana Krall: Jazz
built 188 days ago
Diana Krall does better concerts than records. Her improvising flair enjoyed much freer rein in this performance than on her carefully manicured CDs. Her phrasing was studded with unlikely pauses and sudden tumbling runs of words. This was jazz, and the audience she has pulled from beyond that realm got a healthy dose of the real thing, courtesy of Krall, guitarist Daniel Faehnle and especially the rhythm section of bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Jeff Hamilton.

Diana Krall sings in the style of jazz greats Shirley Horn and Carmen McRae. She plays with a spare piano accompaniment and has a preference for standards. Her songs have appeared on the television show "Sex and the City" and in the film "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

Her father Jim Krall's large record collection helped to expose the young Krall to jazz legends. Diana lost her mother Adella to multiple myeloma in 2002, within months of ... losing her mentors Ray Brown and Rosemary Clooney. Krall's only sibling, her sister Michelle, actively supports her older sister's career.
