Diamox
built 624 days ago
Diamox is an enzyme inhibitor that acts specifically on carbonic anhydrase, the enzyme that catalyzes the reversible reaction involving the hydration of carbon dioxide and the dehydration of carbonic acid. In the eye, this inhibitory action of acetazolamide decreases the secretion of aqueous humor and results in a drop in intraocular pressure, a reaction considered desirable in cases of glaucoma and even in certain non-glaucomatous conditions. Evidence seems to indicate that Diamox has utility as an adjuvant in treatment of certain dysfunctions of the central nervous system (e.g., epilepsy). Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in this area appears to retard abnormal, paroxysmal, excessive discharge from central nervous system neurons. The diuretic effect of Diamox is due to its action in the kidney on the reversible reaction involving hydration of carbon dioxide and dehydration of carbonic acid. The result is renal loss of HCO

Diamox Sequels is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used to treat glaucoma or to remove excess body water. Diamox Sequels may ... be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Blood concentrations of Diamox peak between 3 to 6hours after administration of Sequels, compared to 1 to 4hours with tablets. Placebo-controlled clinical trials have shown that prophylacticadministration of Diamox at a dose of 250mg every 8 to 12 hours(or 500mg Sequels once daily) before and during rapid ascentto altitude results in fewer and/or less severe symptoms (suchas headache, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue) of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Pulmonaryfunction is greater in the Diamox treated group, both insubjects with AMS and asymptomatic subjects. The Diamoxtreated climbers ... had less difficulty in sleeping.

The effects of Diamox Sequels during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Diamox Sequels may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with Diamox Sequels is finished.

A common concern about Diamox is that it will mask the onset of altitude illness. There is no evidence that Diamox masks the onset of AMS, HACE or HAPE; ... Diamox is not guaranteed to work. Even if someone is taking Diamox, AMS, HACE or HAPE may still develop. In which case act accordingly.
