After the vile demon Diablo was apparently destroyed in Diablo, be prepared for the fight of your life as the hellspawn is back in Diablo II. The warrior who defeated Diablo, thinking he could contain the demon, thrust the crystal into his own skull. Yet the overwhelming fury of the arch-demon, combined with the warrior's fatigue, was more than enough to overpower the helpless hero. Diablo immediately twisted the once proud warrior's body into a walking nightmare--you must now stop this new threat.

The story continues where Diablo II ended. Two of the three Prime Evils, Mephisto and Diablo, have been defeated and their Soulstones have been destroyed, preventing their return. However, the narrator Marius was tricked into surrendering the last Soulstone to a false Archangel Tyrael which was revealed to be Baal, the third brother and the very last remaining Prime Evil. Marius was subsequently murdered.
Diablo II will feature four acts, each of which has numerous quests to complete. Some of these are optional, while others are required to advance. In all such quests, the Terrain, monsters and items are randomly generated, making it impossible to write a walkthrough of exactly where to go to find what. However many factors in a quest stay the same no matter how many times you play, such as the final boss, type of monsters etc.

Up to twenty-two official patches have been released for Diablo II. Through the patch history, several exploits and issues have been addressed (such as illegal item duplication), as well as major revamps to the game's balance. Not all patches have affected Diablo II directly, as several were designed to address issues in the expansion to the game and had minimal effects on Diablo II. The game is currently in version 1.11b. The exact real number of patches is impossible to determine as Battle.net has the capability of making minor server-side patches to address immediate issues.
Screenshot #2 The Lord of Terror has returned in Diablo II, and he has befouled three different areas of the mortal plane, and a supernatural one. Your job is to rid each area in turn of his evil influence. Naturally, there will be many side quests in each area, fighting many lesser demons and one larger one on the road to the next area. There is a very nice quest log available to you as you play, to help keep what needs to be done next straight.

The fact is that Diablo II had one thing that TQ will never have, and it was the driving force for most players: an economy. Sure, it wasn't gold based, but it was there. You had to get what you needed from trading.
