Whenever you look for any low carb diet for diabetic patients, it is better you get to know the various glycemic index of carbohydrates. All carbohydrates are not same and they differ very widely based on their glycemic indices. For example, one single piece of whole grain bread and white bread are different and quite opposite in their glycemic index because the white bread due to its refined nature will have more glycemic index.

Most diabetic diets are made up of about 50% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 30% fat. The carbohydrates on a diabetic diet are primarily complex carbohydrates, including fruits, vegetables and whole grain breads and cereals. These complex carbohydrates in prescribed amounts are thought to produce relatively small changes in blood sugar levels.

Although your dietitian will tell you how many grams you should aim for with each meal, everyone - diabetic or not- should stay under 30% of total caloric intake. Try to opt for lower fat versions of butter and mayo but check the labels of the products for the content of carbohydrates and added sugars.
