The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) trial is the largest clinical trial to date to examine the long-term health effects of voluntary weight loss. This multi-center, randomized clinical trial is studying the effects of a lifestyle intervention designed to achieve and maintain weight loss over the long term through decreased caloric intake and increased exercise. Look AHEAD will focus on the disorder most associated with being overweight or obese, type 2 diabetes, and on the outcome that causes the greatest morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes, CVD.

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not make, or does not properly regulate the hormone insulin. Insulin helps the body to store and use the energy from sugar, starches and other foods. The result is that the body doesn't get the energy it needs, and unmetabolized sugar (glucose), builds up in the blood causing damage to the body and its systems. An estimated 18.2 million Americans, or about 3 percent of the U.S. population, have diabetes. Annually, 1.3 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed among people 20 years or older in the United States.

In December of 2006, the United Nations passed a landmark Resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease. The Resolution designates World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year starting in 2007.

The Downtown Dash for Diabetes, a 5K Run/Walk, will be held on Saturday March 15, 2008 in Hurt Park. This year's DASH will start in Hurt Park, go through downtown Atlanta by the Georgia State Capital and through Historic Oakland Cemetery. Race Day Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. The 5K Run/Walk and 1 mile walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.
