The Developmental Psychology program is a research-oriented, multidisciplinary program focusing on fundamental developmental processes within the tapestries of culture, public policy, and education. The program is designed for doctoral students who wish to pursue scientific careers involving research, teaching, and application. The program offers extensive resources to support research activities.

The Developmental Psychology and Education Program provides an opportunity for students to construct an overall perspective on developmental psychology and human development and their implications for practice with children in different applied settings. The M.A./Ph.D. degrees are designed for students who wish to pursue careers in research, and/or university or community college teaching. The M.Ed./Ed.D. degrees are designed for students with teaching qualifications or other related experience. The M.Ed.

The Developmental Psychology program has been highly successful in placing its graduates in excellent academic and applied positions after graduation. On the academic side, Waterloo graduates have held or currently hold faculty positions at many Canadian universities including Brock, Carleton, Concordia, Mount Allison, Queen's, Simon Fraser, University of Guelph, University of Manitoba, University of Victoria, University of Western Ontario,Univerity of Ottawa and York University. On the applied side, Waterloo graduates hold research positions at Yale University, Harvard University, and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; RAND Corporation in California, clinical positions at Stanford Children's Hospital in California and at the Children's Hospital in Vancouver; and school psychologist positions for the Scarborough, Whitby, Peterborough, and Wellington School Boards in Ontario.

The Developmental Psychology program is closely tied in with other areas in the Psychology Department that relate to developmental issues, such as Cognitive, Social, and Child Clinical. It is ... associated with a number of excellent departments and centers on campus that have faculty working on developmental topics, including the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing, the Information School, the Center for Mind, Brain, and Learning, the Center on Human Development and Disability, the Autism Research Center, and the Washington National Primate Research Center.

The program in Developmental Psychology emerges from the strong developmental interests of many faculty in the existing areas and will consist of at least 6 core-faculty and a large number of affiliated faculty from Psychological Sciences and other departments. At this time, the program is directed by Dr. Amanda Rose.
