Devanagari: Scripts
built 615 days ago
Devanagari is the script used for writing Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit. Being closely related to Sanskrit, the mother of majority of the Indian languages, most of the other Indian languages can ... be written in Devanagari.
It is only recently (after Europeans took up Sanskrit study) that Devanagari became the standard script for Sanskrit. It used to be written in the script of the regional language (Bengali in Bengal, Telugu in Andhra or in Grantha in the Tamil region). So, Indian languages (except Tamil, an ancient language itself) have the same alphabet as Sanskrit, with some additions (such as the short E and O vowel sounds in the southern languages).
Over 300 million people around the world use Devanagari script. It is the base script of many languages in India, such as Hindi and Sanskrit. And there are other languages that use variants of this script. Its basic set of symbols consists of 34 consonants and 18 vowels, and though Devanagari has a native set of symbols for numerals, Arabic numbers are now commonly used. Optical Character Recognition for Devanagari is highly complex due to its rich set of conjuncts (see 'devanagari script' for a detailed explanation.)
The Nagari script is essentially an early form of the Devanagari script, which is still used in modern Indian. It appeared around the 8th century CE as an eastern variant of the Gupta script (whereas Sarada was the western variety). In turn it branched off into several scripts (in addition to Devanagari), such as Nandinagari, Bengali, and Tibetan, as well as influenced the Sarada-derived Gurmukhi script.
