The first priority for the Detroit Pistons is to sign NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Ben Wallace. Wallace has won the award four times in the past five years. Earlier in the season, reports say Wallace wants to return to Detroit where he started as a journeyman and molded into the centerpiece of the team. Although, after being benched for the entire fourth quarter in game seven by Head Coach Flip Saunders, it appears Wallace’s future is hazy in Detroit. Saunders allowed the team to be more offensive rather than being defensive-minded like previous Coach Larry Brown, which might explain him benching Wallace in favor of veteran Antonio McDyess.

Initially the Detroit Pistons had a tough time moving up the NBA ladder. During the 1984 season, the roof of the Silverdome collapsed during a snowstorm. Because of this, the Pistons played their home games at Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit. In 1984, the Detroit Pistons lost a tough five-game series to the underdog New York Knicks, three games to two. In the 1985 semi-finals, Detroit would contest the defending champion Celtics to a six game series. Though Boston would prevail, Detroit's surprise performance promised that a rivalry had begun.

The Detroit Pistons have a long storied history of winning. It all started when the team first broke into the National Basketball Association back in 1958. The team only finished the season with a 33-39 record but they did earn a berth into the playoffs. In the first round the Pistons swept the Cincinnati Royals in the first round 2-0. In the second round the team didn't have as much success when they fell to the St. Louis Hawks 4-1 and ended their first NBA postseason run. A little more recently, during the '80s, the team developed a little bit of a mean streak.

The Detroit Pistons reached the playoffs 4four consecutive seasons from 1974 through 1977 and then slipped out of the playoffs for the next 6 seasons. The Pistons began to turn their fortunes around in 1984 when they hired Chuck Daley to be their head coach. The Pistons began to assemble talented players to surround their superstar guard, Isiah Thomas. By 1987, the Pistons were knocking on the door of the NBA Titles with hard nosed players like Bill Laimbeer, Vinny Johnson, Dennis Rodman, John Salley and Rick Mahorn. The Pistons moved to their new home in Auburn Hills in 1988 and reached the NBA Finals that same season only to loose to the Los Angeles Lakers in 7 games. The Pistons returned to the Finals in 1989 and 1990, winning back to back NBA Titles with a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense.

In the second round, they eliminated the Cleveland Cavaliers, having overcome a 3-2 deficit. However, having been defeated by the Miami Heat, they did not make it to the final.
