Detroit Pistons: Teams
built 276 days ago
Throughout the entire 2005-06 NBA season, the Detroit Pistons were the top team in the league. They had the best record, 64-18, and won the Central Division, fourteen games ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers. For the first time in franchise history, they had four all-stars and were favored to win the NBA championship. Despite making the NBA conference finals four years in a row, a first since the Chicago Bulls of the 90s, the squad lost to a revived Miami Heat team that showed sloppy play in the regular season up until the playoffs.
The Detroit Pistons are a team in the National Basketball Association based in the Detroit metropolitan area. The franchise was founded as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. Owner Fred Zollner's Zollner Corporation was a foundry. In 1948, the team became the Fort Wayne Pistons. In 1949, Fred Zollner brokered the formation of the National Basketball Association from the BAA and the NBL at his kitchen table. From that point on, the Fort Wayne Pistons competed in the NBA.

The Detroit Pistons returned to earth after the 1991 title and slowly the team began to disassemble. By 1993, their nucleus of role players was gone and so was their head coach Chuck Daley. The Pistons were out of the playoffs in 1993 for the first time in 9 seasons. Over the next decade, the Pistons flirted with greatness but were never able to reach the success of the late 1980s team. The Pistons won their division title in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, they hired a new coach, Larry Brown.

For two years now, the Detroit Pistons have done a good job of keeping their fans guessing. Or more specifically, wondering what went wrong. Last season, for example, the Pistons seemed on top of their game while putting the upstart Bulls and former teammate Ben Wallace in their place during the second round of the playoffs. Then after winning the first two games against Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals, the Pistons lost four straight and were eliminated with a 16-point loss in Game 6. The ending was similar to the 2005-06 season when the Pistons won 64 games during the regular season before getting knocked out by Miami in the conference finals. Last year's collapse against Cleveland begged the question of whether this is the end of the Pistons' successful run or just a new beginning.
The Detroit Pistons began their basketball life as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, members of the National Basketball League (NBL). Fred Zollner, owner of the team from its formation in 1941 until 1974, played a key role in merging the NBL with the BAA (Basketball Association of America), which created the NBA in 1948. The Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957. The Pistons have won two NBL titles and three NBA titles.
