The Detroit Lions are an American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional team [1], one of many such teams in the Ohio and Scioto River valleys. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the National Football League (NFL) as the other area independents folded because of the Great Depression. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive in Portsmouth, then the NFL's smallest city. The team was purchased and moved to Detroit for the 1934 season.

Along with three other NFL teams, the Detroit Lions began playing in a new stadium in 2002. After more than two decades of playing at the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI, the Lions and Detroit Tigers (MLB) first proposed to have two new stadiums built in downtown Detroit in the mid 1990s. Construction on the Tigers new stadium, Comerica Park began in 1997 and was completed by 1999. Voters approved a bond that paid for 51% percent of the football stadium, while the team paid the remaining 49% of the $430 million stadium. Appropriate enough, Ford Motor Company purchased the naming rights to the stadium... it was named Ford Field. Groundbreaking ceremonies for Ford Field began on November 16, 1999.

The Detroit Lions joined the NFL in 1930. Originally the team played on Portsmouth, Ohio and was known as the Portsmouth Spartans, playing their home games at Universal Stadium. Poor gate sales and the 'Great Depression' forced the team to move from Portsmouth to Detroit. Once in Detroit they changed the team nickname to the Lions and became known as the Detroit Lions. The Lions played split their home games between the University of Detroit Stadium and Tiger Stadium. That same season, Detroit hosted the first every Thanksgiving Day Game, a tradition that continues today.

The Detroit Lions were originally known as the Portsmouth Spartans. They joined the NFL in 1930, and one of the most notable games they played was a match against the Green Bay Packers in 1932. Spartan coach Potsy Clark headed an “iron man” game against the Packers, whom they defeated in a 19-0 game using only 11 players for the whole duration of the contest. The Great Depression eventually drove the Spartans to transfer to Detroit, and they came to be known as the Detroit Lions.

Founded in 1930, the Detroit Lions have not always been called the Detroit Lions. In fact, they have not always been located in Detroit as they started out in Portsmouth Ohio and were known as the Portsmouth Spartans. Then when the Great Depression hit in 1934, the team moved to Detroit.
