Descent

DOS Front Cover Descent is a 3D first-person game that puts the player at the controls of a Pyro-PX spaceship. Descent is notable in that the player travels through various interior locations (mines) but can do so in 720 degrees of movement. The ship ... only moves forward and backward in any of the directions it is facing. The ship is able to use a variety of weapons scattered as power-ups throughout each level. They include: standard lasers, the Vulcan Cannon (a chaingun-like weapon), the Spreadfire Cannon (a rapidly firing, shotgun-like energy weapon), the Plasma Cannon (a rapidly firing energy weapon more suited for medium-range combat), and the Fusion Cannon (fires a ball of energy that's more powerful the longer it is charged it up, but could destroy the ship). All of these weapons, except for the Vulcan Cannon, use the ship's energy supply.

descent.jpg In addition to his original production work, Descent is ... available as a fully-fledged sound designer. Descent has crafted his own unique and cutting edge sound that is well suited to today's multimedia applications. While dance music is his primary focus, he has also produced an original piece for television, created his own Sample CD and produced various pop artists. Most recently, Descent was scouted to create the music and sound for a Nike Commercial. Descent also produced the accompanying scores for pioneering graphics houses, AlphaChannel, and 2advanced (www.2advanced.com).
Descent From there, Descent quickly goes south, too, because it can't find a more compelling way to deal with the aftermath than to have Dawson sink into deep, murky, inscrutable malaise. Little in the second act makes much sense, other than the news that Dawson has lost her intellectual drive and turned to a hedonistic nightlife to dull her pain. Her relationship with a bartender/DJ (Marcus Patrick) who appears to specialize in mending broken women is frustratingly vague, and her metamorphosis into an avenging angel comes out of nowhere. Co-writer/director Talia Lugacy takes a bold risk by trying to turn Descent into a mood piece, but she winds up losing all sense of purpose in the middle section, only to recover in time for a truly risible finale. Though a clearly gifted new filmmaker, Lugacy doesn't get a handle on the combustible material, and she gets scalded in the process.

Descent has been out for a while; in fact, the source code of the original has been released to the public, allowing developers to make changes to the 3D space shooter. This new application file for Descent helps you take advantage of 3Dfx graphics accelerator cards. In order to use this file, you must have a full version of the original Descent, as well as a 3Dfx card, installed. In this version, the frame rate display is fixed and the keyboard config crash is fixed.

In comparison to Descent 1, Descent 2 was designed by far more extravagantly. That became already noticeable in the intro film sequence. Audio music titles of bands like "Type-O-Negative" were new as well. They were stored on the Descent 2 CD and could be played on a normal CD player, too.
