Derrike Cope was planning on professional baseball being his career. The Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles were scouting Derrike during his high school days, but Derrike's father Don insisted he take the scholarship that Whitman College offered. In 1978 with Derrike playing catcher in a collegiate baseball game in Walla Walla, Washington, his plans for a baseball career immediately changed. He went to retrieve a wild pitch and when he turned to throw back to the base, his knee gave way. It turned out that the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments were severed.
Cope, right, posing with a fan in 2004 Derrike Cope is a racing-car driver in NASCAR. Cope is still well known for his win at the 1990 Daytona 500. In recent years, Cope has come into struggles finding a quality ride, but is still relied on as a test driver for up-and-coming teams. Currently, he drives the #74 for McGlynn Racing in the NEXTEL Cup Series.
After a career of driving other people's cars, Derrike Cope has taken matters into his own hands. Cope, of Spanaway, last week announced a partnership with NHRA Pro Stock champion Warren Johnson to form Quest Motor Racing and field a Winston Cup car for the 2001 season.
Derrike Cope takes over the #00 for McGlynn Racing: McGlynn Racing has signed former Daytona 500 winner, Derrike Cope, as primary driver for the 2006 season. The driver change will take place beginning with this week's race in Phoenix. Cope will remain behind the wheel for the final race at Homestead as well. McGlynn Racing has reluctantly parted ways with veteran driver Carl Long. The move was a business decision and was deemed necessary for the team to continue growing. Long has been with the team for over a year and is a big reason for the team's success in breaking into the very competitive NEXTEL Cup Series. Derrike Cope will run a full schedule in 2006 for McGlynn Racing.

Don’t be surprised if you see the 1990 Daytona 500 Champion, Derrike Cope, walk with a little stride this weekend at Daytona. For the first time since the 2000 season, Cope will start the Daytona 500. From the 2001 to the 2003 seasons, Cope struggled in his underfunded #37 attempting to make races. In that span, he missed the 500 in ’01, ’02, and ’03 as well as many of the other races that he attempted. But now, like many others in the past, he has scaled down from owner/driver to just driver.

Following the 1992 season, Cope left the Whitcomb operation--which closed down--and drove an originally unsponsored #66 Ford for Cale Yarborough. The car was later sponsored by Bojangles, and the number changed to #98, reflecting the restaurant's 98 menu items.
