Dermatitis herpetiformis is usually extremely itchy. The bumps or blisters usually appear on the elbows, knees, back, and buttocks. In most cases, the rash is the same size and shape on both sides. Symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis tend to come and go.

To diagnose atopic dermatitis, the doctor will take a careful medical history, looking especially at allergy among other family members. If food is the suspected cause of a child's eczema, the doctor may delete milk, egg, peanut, or other suspected foods from the child's diet to see if symptoms go away. If there is a history of atopic dermatitis among other family members, the doctor may suggest that solid foods be withheld from infants until they are at least six months old.

The most frequently noted symptoms in patients with exfoliative dermatitis include malaise, pruritis and a chilly sensation. Both hyperthermia and hypothermia are reported. Other clinical findings include lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, edema of the foot or ankle4,6 and gynecomastia.19
