Dermatitis: Scalp

Seborrheic dermatitis causes yellowish scales to develop on the scalp, the hairline and the eyebrows. This is often confused with the crusting and scaling on the eyelids that occur with ocular rosacea. A doctor should check any scaling around the eyes, as the potential side effects of ocular rosacea are more serious than those of seborrheic dermatitis.
Coal-tar shampoos may be used for seborrheic dermatitis that occurs on the scalp. Sun exposure after the use of these shampoos should be avoided because the risk of sunburn of the scalp is increased.

Psoriasis vulgaris may be difficult to distinguish from seborrheic dermatitis. Psoriasis vulgaris of the scalp presents as sharply demarcated scalp plaques. Other signs of psoriasis, such as nail pitting or distal onycholysis... may facilitate distinction.
