The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis is frequently described as “the itch that rashes.” Itching can become so intense that it diminishes a person’s quality of life. Children, who are most likely to develop atopic dermatitis, often cannot sleep through the night due to the intense itch.
Allergic contact dermatitis is a common skin condition that results in an itchy weeping rash, typically a few days after direct skin contact. Common causes include nickel, chemicals, plants, cosmetics, perfumes and ointments.
While atopic dermatitis cannot be cured, most cases can be controlled with proper treatment. The goals of treatment are to hydrate the skin, reduce inflammation, decrease the risk of infection, and alleviate the itchy rash.
Most people who have atopic dermatitis have a personal or family history of allergies, such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and asthma. The skin inflammation that causes the atopic dermatitis rash is thought to be a type of allergic response.

When the eruption (rash) has been present for a prolonged time, chronic changes occur due to the constant scratching and rubbing known as lichenification (thickening of the skin with accentuation of the skin lines to form a crisscross pattern).

Contact dermatitis typically causes the skin to develop a pink or red rash, which may or may not itch. Pinpointing the exact cause of contact dermatitis can be difficult. Among plants, the leading culprits are poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, although contact with certain flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables irritate some people.
