Diagnosis — There is no specific test for diagnosing seborrheic dermatitis. The diagnosis is usually based upon a person's history and physical examination. In rare cases, a skin biopsy (removing a small sample of skin) may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions that mimic seborrheic dermatitis.

The most effective method of dealing with any type of dermatitis risk is through prevention. The substitution of hazardous chemicals with safer materials, whenever possible, will greatly decrease the risk of dermatitis. This may involve modifications in procedures but can often be accomplished through direct substitution. The second line of defense against dermatitis is the use of protective equipment and barrier creams. It is important to always wear gloves (powder-free, if possible) and a lab coat when working with any potentially irritating material.

Exfoliative dermatitis is the result of a dramatic increase in the epidermal turnover rate. In patients with this disorder, the mitotic rate and the absolute number of germinative skin cells are higher than normal. Moreover, the time necessary for cells to mature and travel through the epidermis is decreased. This compressed maturation process results in an overall greater loss of epidermal material, which is manifested clinically as severe scaling and shedding. Normal epidermis undergoes some exfoliation every day, but the scales that are lost contain little, if any, important viable material, such as nucleic acids, soluble proteins and amino acids.4 In exfoliative dermatitis... protein and folate losses may be high.5

Bacteria in water-containing metal removal fluids do not cause dermatitis, but may aggravate the situation and cause a secondary infection. Proper maintenance and cleaning of the MRF system, and especially the sumps, can reduce the incidence of dermatitis and respiratory problems reported by employees.
