A prescription-strength steroid ointment is the treatment of choice for nummular dermatitis. A short course of an oral steroid (eg, prednisone) is occasionally required. It may be helpful to avoid irritants, if they can be identified. Skin moisturizers are an important part of the management of nummular dermatitis; a rich moisturizing cream or ointment should be applied immediately after bathing.

Irritant dermatitis can be caused by anything that causes abrasions on the skin or that removes the skins natural oils. Also, such materials or activities can make the skin more susceptible to dermatitis. Dry air, extreme cold, changing humidity, and even the normal aging process can predispose the skin to dermatitis.
