Digital dermatitis is a highly contagious, erosive, and proliferous infection of cow hooves. Morbidity within a herd can be greater than 90 percent, and the infection can affect any breed or age group and spreads rapidly from newly acquired animals. The condition was first seen in European countries, but during the last decade it has spread across the dairy-producing areas of the USA.

With time, atopic dermatitis usually improves. For most children, the condition tends to go away by the teenage years, but the dry skin associated with the disease may remain. Occasionally, eczema may flare up in later years during times of stress or exposure to irritants.
