Derek Jeter's potential has never been in question. Ever since the day the Yankees decided to bring Derek Jeter along (to soon according to some) as their everyday shortstop. Jeter has done nothing short of paying off completely. By the time he's through with his Major League career, Derek could have a championship ring for each of his 10 fingers and maybe a few of his toes. He played on his fourth World Series winner in 2000, in just his fifth season as the Yankees' shortstop. Away from the field, few players are as popular as Derek Jeter.

During his high school days at Kalamazoo Central High School Jeter outshined several of his schoolmates and came up as a star baseball player.

Looking to better his numbers from 1998, Derek Jeter had yet another career year in 1999. He posted his first 100 RBI season, as well as his first 20 home run year. Jeter led the Yankees to yet another World Series title over Atlanta, batting .375 for the entire postseason.

Jeter has a reputation for making dramatic defensive plays, as a couple instances have drawn a great deal of attention. Perhaps the most notable example of this occurred on October 13, 2001 (Boxscore), during the Game 3 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees trailed in the series 2 games to none, but led 1-0 in the 7th inning. With the A's Jeremy Giambi on first representing the tying run, Terrence Long hit a shot down the right-field line. While Giambi lumbered around the bases, Yankee rightfielder Shane Spencer grabbed the ball and fired it toward home plate. However, Spencer rushed the throw and missed not one, but two cutoff men.
