Derek Jeter: Runs
built 200 days ago
To his credit, Vinik was not overzealous like Jeffrey Maier, a 12-year old Yankees fan who reached over the right-field fence and pulled Derek Jeter’s flyball over it for a tarnished home run during the 1996 playoffs. Vinik did not interfere with a player like Steve Bartman did with Cubs’ left fielder Moises Alou in the 2003 playoffs. All Vinik did was use his height and his reach, which is pretty much what any loyal Red Sox fan would do.

Moments after this message was displayed on the board, Jeter sent a 3-2 pitch from Byung-Hyun Kim over the right field stands. A fan in the stands held up a sign with the words "Mr. November", which he likely planned to hold up if anyone did something major after midnight. Michael Kay, who called the walkoff home run, called Jeter by this name, referencing the sign. Despite the nickname, Jeter was 3 for 12 (.250) in November baseball that season, as the Yankees lost the World Series in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On August 22nd, 2006 Jeter became the all-time Yankee leader in singles.

On May 29, 1995, Derek got his first taste of the Majors after Yankee shortstop Tony Fernandez was placed on the disabled list. His big league debut came in Seattle that day, and Derek started at shortstop alongside All-Star infielders Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs. The following day, Derek collected his first two Major League hits and scored his first career run.

Jeter hit a two-run homer to right center in the fifth to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead. The Devil Rays came back and had a 5-4 lead entering the seventh, but the Yankees rallied for three runs in that inning. The rally was capped by Jeter beating out an infield single for an RBI when third basemen Akinori Iwamura couldn't get a grip on the ball after making a nice diving stop. Jeter now has seven homers and 48 RBI on the season.

In 1999 Jeter led the AL in hits (219), and was 2nd in the league in batting average (.349) and runs (134). Jeter (who batted 3rd in the lineup part of the year) ... drove in 102 runs, becoming only the 2nd Yankee shortstop ever to do so. (Lyn Lary had driven in 107 runs in 1931).
