Although depression in the elderly is very common, the aging process itself is unlikely to be the cause in most cases. An Italian study, for example, indicated that the very old (people who lived beyond 90 years of age) were no more likely to be depressed than younger adults. (The rate was 10% in both groups.) Studies on the cause or extent of depression in the elderly are not clear.

Researchers are looking for ways to better understand, diagnose and treat depression among all groups of people. New potential treatments are being tested that give hope to those who live with depression that is particularly difficult to treat, and researchers are studying the risk factors for depression and how it affects the brain. NIMH continues to fund cutting–edge research into this debilitating disorder.

"TMS provides a well-tolerated treatment option to patients whose depression is otherwise treatment resistant," says John P. O'Reardon, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Penn, and lead study author. "Since TMS is administered via the scalp and therefore goes directly to the brain, it allows the patient to avoid bodily side effects such as weight gain, sedation and/or sexual function."

Additionally, the researchers believe that efforts to treat the depression could possibly improve the outcomes after lung transplantation. While their study focused on patients awaiting transplantation, the researchers say that what they are learning about depression could ... help other patients with severe lung disease, such as the estimated 16 million Americans who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
