Individual or group psychotherapy can help people with depression gradually resume former responsibilities and adapt to the normal pressures of life, building on the improvement made by antidepressant drug treatment. Interpersonal psychotherapy can provide the people with supportive guidance while adjusting to changes in life roles. Cognitive therapy can help change hopelessness and negative thinking. Psychotherapy alone may be just as effective as drug therapy for mild depression.

The symptoms of depression described above make it clear: To be depressed is to suffer.
