Depression in family members increases the risk for depression in other family members. Studies report that depression for even 1 - 2 months in a mother increases the risk for depression in her children. The more severe the maternal depression, the higher the risk for depression in the children. In a perpetuating cycle, being depressed as a child increases the risk for depression during adulthood. In such cases, genetic or environmental factors or both may be responsible. Spouses of partners with depression are themselves at higher risk for depression.

Postpartum depression can affect a mother’s ability to parent. She may lack energy, have trouble concentrating, be irritable, and not be able to meet her child’s needs for love and affection. As a result, she may feel guilty and lose confidence in herself as a mother, which can worsen the depression. Researchers believe that postpartum depression can affect the infant by causing delays in language development, problems with emotional bonding to others, behavioral problems, lower activity levels, sleep problems, and distress. It helps if the father or another caregiver can assist in meeting the needs of the baby and other children in the family while mom is depressed.

About 2% of American primary school-age children and 4 - 8% of adolescents suffer from depression. Studies suggest that when children or adolescents are treated, up to 80% recover. Still, 25 - 50% of these young people have a recurrence of depression within 2 years of their first episode of depression.

A child with depression may pretend to be sick, refuse to go to school, cling to a parent, or worry that a parent may die. Older children may sulk, get into trouble at school, be negative and irritable, and feel misunderstood. Because these signs may be viewed as normal mood swings typical of children as they move through developmental stages, it may be difficult to accurately diagnose a young person with depression.

Parents taking care of their own needs can help prevent depression in their children. In addition, nurturing attention, exploration and activity, good sleep, and good nutrition can be helpful. Some kids will become depressed, though, even in an ideal situation.
