Department of Corrections: Prisons
built 795 days ago
August 22, 2002 Attorney General Mike Moore has asked a judge to rule that the state Department of Corrections doesn't have the authority to cancel a contract with a private prison in Greenwood. Moore filed the court motion Wednesday, just two days before a judge is set to hear a breach of contract suit filed against Gov. Ronnie Musgrove and the Department of Corrections by the Delta Prison Authority. Moore said he still hopes the case is settled out of court. The motion was filed in Leflore County Chancery Court, but the case will be heard in Clarksdale. The attorney general contends Musgrove's veto of a provision earmarking up to $54 million for private prisons is void. Arguing the money was no longer available, Musgrove renegotiated cheaper contracts with four private prisons and ordered the closure of Delta Correctional Facility in Greenwood.

The Department of Corrections generally only has custody of, and information on, offenders who have received a sentence of incarceration in a Nevada State Prison, and are currently serving that sentence. The Department does not have current information on parolees, individuals sentenced to probation, or those who have only been arrested and are awaiting trial or sentencing (and have not yet been sentenced to a prison term). If you have heard that someone has been arrested and you are trying to locate them or find out more information, you will need to contact the county or city in which they were arrested. In the Las Vegas area, check with the Clark County Detention Center. In Northern Nevada, check with the Washoe County Detention Facility.

May 7, 2002 Pike County officials say they have found evidence that they shouldn’t have to reimburse the U.S. Department of Justice $30,836 in grant funds after all. In another matter, supervisors voted to go ahead with the purchase of 110 acres to enlarge the industrial park for a federal prison even though the prison hasn’t been formally approved. The Pike County Economic Development District will buy the land for $800,000, and the county will issue bonds. The option to buy was set to expire May 1. The county won’t qualify for a grant until the prison is formally approved. The purchase was contingent on the prison project, which has been delayed repeatedly by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Well, that didn't take long. After Wisconsin Post-Crescent ran a series of stories on incarcerated mothers earlier this week that highlighted the mind-boggling practice of shackling female prisoners during childbirth, the state Department of Corrections vowed to review its policy. On Thursday, department secretary Matt Frank announced that policy has been ended.

DISCHRG: An offender who has discharged from his sentence is no longer under the supervision of the Michigan Department of Corrections for that sentence. If an offender has no active sentences, then the department would not have any means of contacting the offender. There are several ways in which offenders discharge from their sentences: discharge while on parole or probation (successful completion of parole or probation); discharge on the maximum (failure to parole from prison before the maximum portion of the sentence is completed); and death (dies before completion of the sentence).

Prison sources identified the victim as Brian Ricks, 28, who was sentenced to 180 months in prison from Ashley County on charges of first degree sexual assault and incest.
