Denzel Washington photo Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington is a man constantly on the move. Never comfortable repeating himself or his successes, Washington is always in search of new challenges and his numerous and varied film and stage portrayals bear this out. From Trip, an embittered runaway slave in Glory, to South African freedom fighter Steven Biko in Cry Freedom; From Shakespeare's tragic historical figure Richard III, to the womanizing trumpet player, Bleek Gilliam in Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues, Washington has amazed and entertained us with a rich array of characters distinctly his own. In 2004, Washington collaborated with Tony Scott on Man On Fire. In this film, Washington plays an ex marine who has been hired to protect a young girl, played by Dakoda Fanning, from kidnapping threats. That same year, Washington was ... seen in The Manchurian Candidate, a modern day remake of the 1962 classic film for Paramount Pictures.

Likened to Sidney Poitier for his ability to appeal to a multiracial audience, Denzel Washington parlayed his matinee idol looks and finely honed acting skills into becoming the first of his generation's African-American movie star on Hollywood's A-list. The self-proclaimed underachiever at Fordham University debuted in a college production of "The Emperor Jones" and soon after appeared as the school's "Othello", causing his professor Robinson Stone to remark to The Boston Globe (August, 5, 1990): "He was easily the best Othello I had ever seen, and I had seen Paul Robeson play it. Jose Ferrer came to look at it. He and I agreed that Denzel had a brilliant career ahead of him." By the time he graduated in 1977, Washington had landed a part in "Wilma" (CBS, 1977), a biopic of black track star Wilma Rudolph, which introduced him to his future wife Pauletta Pearson. He ... enjoyed incredible success on the New York stage, particularly as a member of the OBIE-winning ensemble of Charles Fuller's "A Soldier's Play" and as Malcolm Shabazz (a.k.a. Malcolm X) in "When the Chicken Comes Home to Roost" (both 1981).
Denzel Washington, Tyra Banks courtesy Jeff Vespa/WireImage.com Denzel Washington is starring in a remake of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) for director Tony Scott, with a new screenplay by David Koepp. Now, Washington and Koepp are very talented and Scott can get a movie made, but among movies in no need of remaking, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three ranks high on the list. So this week's DVD Tuesday is dedicated to the original, in all its grimy glory. How do you steal a New York City subway train? Former movie publicist Morton Freedgood figured out a way, and his 1973 novel, written under the pseudonym "John Godey," was snapped up before publication and immediately put into production under director Joseph Sargent and screenwriter Peter Stone. read more

Denzel Washington Denzel Washington was born on Dec. 28, 1954, in Mt. Vernon, NY, a predominantly African-American suburb just north of Manhattan. His father was a preacher at the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ and ... worked for the NY's Water Department, while his mother - a Harlem-bred former Gospel singer - owned and operated a local beauty parlor. Washington began working odd jobs from the time he was a student at Grimes Elementary School; also becoming active in the Boys & Girls Club, which he credited for keeping him out of trouble. The club's mentors were especially helpful after his parents' divorce, when Washington lost contact with his father and the restless teen increasingly found himself hanging out on the streets with kids who would ultimately end up dead or doing time. His mother eventually opted to send Washington and his older sister to Oakland Academy boarding school. After graduation, Washington began college at Fordham University in the Bronx - safely on the right path.
Hollywood Reporter --- Anne Heche is in final negotiations to join Denzel Washington in New Line Cinema's "John Q." Shooting is scheduled to begin next month. Written by James Kearn, "John Q" revolves around a down-on-his-luck father (Washington) whose son needs a heart transplant. When insurance won't cover the operation, Washington's character decides to take the hospital's emergency room hostage until doctors agree to perform the surgery. Heche has been cast as a hospital administrator who enforces the regulations that prevent Washington's son from getting the operation he needs. Heche, repped by WMA and manager Lauren Lloyd, recently wrapped "Prozac Nation." She next stars in the indie feature "Auggie Rose."
