The movie, which stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, is being distributed by General Electric Co.'s Universal Pictures and is set to open on Nov. 2. Yet it has been available for about 24 hours on various filesharing sites, and high-quality DVDs were being sold for $5 in Los Angeles this morning.

WHEN Denzel Washington was growing up, the son of a minister, he was not allowed to go to the movies. As a young man, after he had turned to acting and moved to Manhattan, he went through the usual phase of fairly regular moviegoing. But then he moved to Los Angeles in the early 80's and became established as a top star, and once again he found himself seeing fewer and fewer movies.

In 2000 Washington starred as a no-nonsense high school football coach who leads his racially mixed team to the state title in Remember the Titans. In Training Day (2001) Washington played a corrupt Los Angeles police officer, a performance that earned him an Academy Award for best actor.
