Dentures: New Dentures

Dentures are made to fit precisely. If they are cared for properly, they do not change in shape. If dentures become ill-fitting, it is most likely due to natural changes in the gums and bone supporting them. When your dentures do not fit properly, see your dentist as soon as possible so adjustments can be made. Do not try to change the fit of your dentures yourself because damage can occur that makes them unrepairable, costing much more money to buy brand new dentures, rather than an adjustment. Ill-fitting dentures repaired at home can irritate the gums, tongue and cheeks.
Oops!, guess they dont fit properly anymore Dentures change the shape of the mouth and therefore it may be a little while before your tongue "wakes up" to the new space. To improve your confidence, its often helps just to spend a little time reading aloud in front of a mirror. Certain words will cause you to stumble, but practice and repetition overcomes any real problems.

Getting use to New Dentures can have it's problems like no room in your mouth for food, slurred speech, feels like two rocks in your mouth, hard time chewing, bitting your tongue etc.. All this is natural and your worst enemy is YOUSELF and your best friend is TIME!
Have your dentist carefully evaluate your dentures and check for obvious signs of poor fit, poor bite and overall jawbone health. Sometimes a temporary or permanent reline is needed to increase retention. Sometimes a whole new denture is needed! And sometimes, nothing can be done because the patient has lost too much jawbone where the denture rests. In this situation, the patient may elect to use adhesive and keep going as is, or consider dental implants as anchors to keep the denture secure. The most important thing to remember is - see your dentist if your dentures are giving you problems - don't suffer in silence!

Dr Wilding does all the initial laboratory stages of work for your dentures including the setting of all the teeth. This is time consuming work but does insure that the laboratory processes are a seamless continuation of the work done at the chair-side. Dr Wilding will set the front teeth at the chair side with you. This provides opportunities for your approval as the position of the new teeth is established step by step. He will set the back teeth and prepare the dentures for casting in his laboratory at Haytor.

New dentures may feel awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks or even months. Eating and speaking with dentures might take a little practice. A bulky or loose feeling is not uncommon, while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold your dentures in place. Excessive saliva flow, a feeling that the tongue does not have adequate room, and minor irritation or soreness are ... not unusual. If you experience irritation, see your dentist.
