Dentures are durable enough to stand up to chewing and biting, but fragile when they are out of your mouth. Dropping them or throwing them down on a sink or counter can break a tooth or part of the denture base.

When you first wear dentures, you may feel as though they dont fit properly. You may feel that they gag you, or that you are biting your cheeks or tongue. Dont worrythese problems will lessen as you adjust to your dentures. If you wear an upper denture, it may take some time for your tongue to get used to the feeling of being pressed against the denture and not the roof of your mouth.

Like wearing braces or a retainer, dentures can cause soreness at first and take some time to get adjusted to. Also like braces or retainers, dentures need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked in denture solution when not in the mouth.

Even with full dentures, you still need to take good care of your mouth. Every morning, brush your gums, tongue and palate with a soft-bristled brush before you put in your dentures. This removes plaque and stimulates circulation in the mouth. Selecting a balanced diet for proper nutrition is ... important for maintaining a healthy mouth.

You may find that chewing feels different with dentures. You may ... think that food has lost its flavour. While you are adjusting to dentures, your mind is receiving strong signals from your mouth about your dentures, which overpower the messages from your taste buds. After you are accustomed to the denture, your mind will pay less attention to your dentures and more to your taste buds.

Sore Spots: Usually, your mouth will have a few “sore spots” after wearing the dentures for 24 hours. Don’t worry about these areas. They can be relieved with very little effort on your next appointment. Another appointment about 7 days later will usually eliminate any other sore areas.
