Dentures: Lower Dentures

Some patients who believe they have "bad teeth" may think it is in their best interests to have all their teeth extracted and full dentures placed. However, statistics show that the majority of patients who actually receive this treatment wind up regretting they did so. This is because full dentures have only 10% of the chewing power of natural teeth, and it is difficult to get them fitted satisfactorily, particularly in the mandibular arch. Even if a patient retains one tooth, that will contribute to the denture's stability. However, retention of just one or two teeth in the upper jaw does not contribute much to the overall stability of a denture, since a full upper denture tends to be very stable, in contrast to a full lower denture. It is ... advised that patients keep their natural teeth as long as possible, especially their lower teeth.

If your dentures click when you speak, try to speak more slowly to avoid movements that raise and/or move your lower denture. Keeping your lower denture in place requires the ability to hold it still with the muscles of your lips, cheeks, and tongue. At first, these muscles may tend to kick out your denture. With time and practice, you will be able to overcome the difficulties of speaking.

It is a fallacy to think that complete dentures mean the end to troubles with your teeth. Surveys show that about three-fourths of the people who have lower dentures are unhappy with them. They usually aren't as vocal as the people who are happy with their dentures, which can give you a false picture. About half of those with upper dentures are unhappy with them. They may not complain much to their friends because they may feel embarrassed that they made such a poor decision.

Upper vs. Lower Dentures: Your upper denture will rest in place with moderate to strong suction. Although your lower denture should have good stability, it is infrequent that “suction” can be expected on a lower denture. Denture adhesives can help, but mini dental implants (MDI) will give you the best results.

Partial dentures as is well known cause a lot of problems, they may only replace a few teeth, yet feel quite large in your mouth. The traditional plastic partial denture can ... have a tendency to have teeth break off. It is a fact that over half of all lower partial dentures made are never worn!
