Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth, and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable... there are many different denture designs, some which rely on bonding or clipping onto teeth or dental implants. There are two main categories of dentures, depending on whether they are used to replace missing teeth on the [M]andibular arch or the maxillary arch. There are many informal names for dentures such as dental plate, false teeth and falsies.

Conventional Dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. Conventional dentures is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

An advantage of immediate dentures is that the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums can shrink over time, especially during the period of healing in the first six months after the removal of teeth. When gums shrink, immediate dentures may require rebasing or relining to fit properly. A conventional denture can then be made once the tissues have healed. Healing may take at least 6-8 weeks.

There are two main types of dentures-complete and partial. A denture that replaces all teeth is called a complete denture; a partial denture replaces missing teeth and keeps the surrounding teeth from changing position. Complete dentures can be either conventional or immediate. For a conventional denture, all the patient's teeth are removed and time is allowed for the patient to heal, after which the dentures are fitted. Immediate dentures are fit into the mouth immediately after the appropriate teeth are removed. At an office visit prior to this placement, the necessary measurements and a model of your teeth are made, so that the dentures are ready to be fit immediately after the teeth are removed. With immediate dentures, you don't have to spend any time without teeth. However, the gums and bones of the jaws may shrink somewhat as they heal after the placement of the dentures; ... several adjustments of the dentures may be necessary. Immediate dentures may also be used as a temporary solution until conventional dentures are placed.
