The National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped started the Donated Dental Services program to help disabled and elderly persons who are low-income by matching them with volunteer dentists. Volunteer dentists agree to treat one or two people each year with dental problems, and dental laboratories ... donate services. The Dental House Call project has been started where dentists will come to you. Contact National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, 1800 15th St., Suite 100, Denver, CO 80202; 303-534-5360, Fax: 303-534-5290; www.nfdh.org.

[M]edical tourism has been linked to poor dental care, pain, suffering, and infection. At chron.com, former Army dentist Charlie Norwood says that "Some patients are lucky, and find a qualified dentist who delivers good treatment at a bargain price. Other patients are not so lucky, suffer serious injury from unqualified hacks, and end up hospitalized or worse from infection. Quality in dental care in the border towns is found solely in the luck of the draw."

You see, dental and vision insurance concentrates more on prevention than cure - though the specialists in the field deal with this too! Having a good policy for both of these will always be a great investment as they will not only prevent nasty bills, but they will encourage regular inspections of your mouth and teeth.

Many of the local health offices provide dental services to children and to income-eligible adults on a sliding fee scale. Contact your county office of health listed in your telephone book or your state Department of Health.
