The Oral Health Diabetes and Cardiovascular Programs are being created to address the emerging evidence demonstrating a connection between dental health and other systemic health conditions. For example, diabetes can slow the healing process and lower one's resistance to infections and those with diabetes tend to have more periodontal (gum) disease. Moderate or severe gum disease can increase the time a diabetic's blood sugar remains high. One study showed that when diabetic patients' periodontal infections were treated, they experienced a marked improvement in the ability to manage their blood sugar(1). Further, evidence is mounting that people with periodontal disease may be at higher risk for heart disease and stroke. That's because bacterial by-products from the gum tissues may enter the blood stream and cause small blood clots that may contribute to the clogging of arteries.

All states appear to use fee schedules to reimburse dental providers when they provide services to their fee-for–service Medicaid patients. But the mere existence of such schedules does not attract providers. Rather, most observers agree that states that have increased the fees in these schedules have been able to attract dental providers to their Medicaid programs. Conversely, many states have seen their numbers of Medicaid dental providers fall because the fees in their schedules have remained stagnant and are often only a small fraction of the actual cost of providing the care. In Connecticut, for example, adult Medicaid fees have not risen in 20 years and children’s fees have been the same for over 10 years.

Scientists ... found no compelling evidence that taking antibiotics prior to a dental procedure prevents IE in patients who are at risk of developing a heart infection. Their hearts are already often exposed to bacteria from the mouth, which can enter their bloodstream during basic daily activities such as brushing or flossing. The new guidelines are based on a comprehensive review of published studies that suggests IE is more likely to occur as a result of these everyday activities than from a dental procedure.
