OVER 200 GUESTS at Deborah Karmanos' 50th birthday party Monday night at Somerset Inn in Troy suspected it was a special event when comedian Dennis Miller, fresh from the Emmys on Sunday, was the surprise opening act. The crowd was further impressed by the main act: Michael Bolton. Compuware Corp. boss Peter Karmanos said his wife was totally surprised and thrilled by his entertainment coup. Bolton, who rarely plays private parties, told Deborah, "You must be a very special person to have someone do this for you."

Dennis Miller had an unlikely start as a comedian— Dennis Miller wanted to be a news journalist. However, the Pittsburgh native decided to pursue comedy and got his start in such clubs as New York’s “The Comic Strip” and Los Angeles’ “The Improv.”

Point Park College graduate Dennis Miller rose to national fame in 1985 as the new "Weekend Update" commentator on TV's Saturday Night Live. Miller's equal-opportunity bashing of political and showbiz celebrities earned him a reputation as a satirist of the first water; his catchphrase "I'm outta here!" reverberated throughout the land for the next six seasons. The puckish comedian went on to turn out such comedy records as The Off-White Album and to host a batch of irreverent cable-TV specials. In 1994, he co-produced and starred in a nightly chat-fest appropriately titled Dennis Miller Live. Reportedly, certain intrigues involving the booking of guests caused a temporary rift between Miller and his longtime friend--and late-night rival-Jay Leno.

In the mid-eighties, Dennis Miller was bumped up to the major leagues of comedy when he was "discovered" by "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels, who caught the comedian's act at The Comedy Store in L.A. one night, and subsequently invited him to join the cast. Following the well-worn path blazed by Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, and Jane Curtin, Miller stepped in as anchorman for S.N.L.'s popular "Weekend Update" sketch, which provided a perfect showcase for his libertarian soapboxing. He delivered the news of the week with acerbic fury, and by the end of his report, after he had signed off with a trademark pen flourish across his copy and an "I am outta here," viewers didn't feel quite the same about being American.

Hosted by one of TV's funniest and most acerbic comedians and shot live in L.A., each edition of Dennis Miller Live begins with a "rant" featuring Miller's scathing perspective and razor-sharp wit. Miller talks to call-in viewers and celebrities on the show, such as Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Jerry Seinfeld. The show ... features political figures like Bill Bradley, Joycelyn Elders and Ann Richards.
